Species group:

Other name(s): Alusky

The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.

The first generation Alaskan Malamute / Siberian Husky is a cross between a pure Alaskan Malamute and a pure Siberian Husky, although subsequent generations may have different proportions of the two breeds in the mix. Although the outcome of a mixed breed is always unpredictable, here you have a cross between two energetic, highly trainable cold weather working breeds. You can expect a dog that is happiest in a cooler climate where it can spend a lot of time playing and exercising with you outdoors.

Appearance / health:
The Alusky is a larger dog with a surprisingly variable appearance. Sometimes you'll get an individual with a Siberian's blue eyes.

Behavior / temperament:
Although the personality traits of a mixed breed are unpredictable, the reality here is that you have the offspring of two energetic working breeds that appreciate being given something interesting to do. Leave them alone for endless hours, and they may be forced to create their own entertainment-- the destructive kind. This mix is best for active, outdoorsy owners in cooler climates.
