The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.

The American Bully is itself a mix between the American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier, although it's possible that in turn it could be further mixed with other breeds or hybrids either to moderate its qualities or by accident. In any case, you should be aware of some basic facts about the American Bully before you choose this animal.

Both parent breeds of the American Bully are powerful dogs that should only be owned by responsible, committed dog owners, and the American Bully mix is unlikely to be much different. Careless or irresponsible owners create a dangerous situation for families and neighborhoods and bad publicity for all bully breeds. You should only own this dog if you are committed to properly socializing your pet. Before choosing the Bully, you will want to check your local laws and also your insurer to be certain you're allowed to keep this particular animal.

Appearance / health:
The American Bully has the athletic muscular build of the American Pit Bull, and the size and mass of the American Staffordshire Terrier. They are of a medium height and length and should have larger blocky shaped heads. Muzzles should be relatively short and blocky. The chest should be wide and deep, and shoulders should be set wide and have a muscular definition.

Behavior / temperament:
In theory, the American Bully is a happy, outgoing, stable, and confident dog bred to be less aggressive than the Pit Bull Terrier, but not as passive as the American Staffordshire Terrier. Be that as it may, the temperament of mixes is never fully predictable. If possible, get to know the American Bully mix in question before you decide to adopt. To get the best out of this dog, have experience socializing and managing protector breeds.
