The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.

The first generation Pitsky is a cross between a pure American Pit Bull Terrier and a pure Siberian Husky, although subsequent generations may have different proportions of the two breeds in the mix. Because of the significant challenges involved in socializing this potentially difficult mix, it is probably best recommended to experienced owners only.

Appearance / health:
While all mixed-breed dogs can vary in appearance, at least some American Pit Bull Terrier / Siberian Husky mixes look like so-called pit bull mixes. You need to check your local laws to be sure you are allowed to own these mixes in your area.

Behavior / temperament:
While it's always impossible to predict the exact traits inherited by any mixed-breed dog, the Pitsky could present a genuine challenge. With any pit bull mix, it's critical to socialize and train your pet so that it won't become over-protective or react inappropriately to perceived threats. With any Spitz mix, you face the chance of getting a dominant dog who will test you to see if you're a real alpha. If you can't provide calm, cosistent leadership to a powerful dog, you should pass on this mix.
