Species group: Mixed Breeds
The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The pairing between an Australian and an English Shepherd isn't all that common, but you may occasionally encounter this mix in a rescue.
Appearance / health:
This mix of two breeds that casual dog owners can't easily tell apart is likely to give you an animal that many people will simply assume is an Australian Shepherd. However, since it is a mix, you should avoid breeding it, in order to avoid creating even more confusion for dog fanciers in the future.
Behavior / temperament:
The Australian Shepherd / English Shepherd Mix is likely to be true to its herding dog heritage. It will be intelligent, responsive, and energetic. They can make fine farm dogs, because they enjoy having something interesting to do. A bored dog could be destructive.
