Species group: Mixed Breeds
The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The pairing between an Australian Terrier and a Chow Chow isn't all that common, but you may occasionally encounter this mix in a rescue.
Appearance / health:
All mixed-breed dogs can vary in appearance, and it's a roll of the dice whether your mix resembles the Australian Terrier or the Chow Chow parent more. Some individuals may have a black tongue.
Behavior / temperament:
While it's impossible to predict the exact personality of a mixed-breed, any Chow Chow mix can present a challenge, since these genes bring an independent and sometimes stubborn streak. Know how to be a consistent alpha who can properly socialize an energetic dog.
Cerenia is very effective in controlling the nausea/vomiting associated with Parvovirus infections. Once daily administration (as opposed to 2-4 times per day with other antiemetic injections) makes it very convenient. It is more expensive than other antiemetics, but worth it, in my opinion.
