The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.

The first generation Basenji / Beagle Mix is a cross between a pure Basenji and a pure Beagle, although subsequent generations may have different proportions of the two breeds in the mix. This isn't a common mix, but you may occasionally encounter it in a rescue.

Appearance / health:
It's impossible to predict the exact traits inherited by a mixed-breed dog, but you may expect a lightly built hound.

Behavior / health:
In an ideal world, the cross between a world-class sighthound like the Basenji and a popular scenthound like the Beagle would be an amazing hound capable of hunting small game both by sight and by scent. However, the fact that hunters seldom make this cross intentionally suggests that the pure breeds probably serve their purpose better than the cross. Be that as it may, this mix can make a fine companion animal for owners who are able to train with positive reinforcement. Be intuitive. The Basenji side of the family may bring a little more reserve than you're used to from the rambunctious Beagle.

You will want to consider leash-training. There are just too many ways to stimulate this mix to give chase and put itself in danger of being hit by a car or being lost.
