The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.

The first generation American Staffordshire Terrier / Bernese Mountain Dog Mix is a cross between a pure AmStaff and a pure Bernese Mountain Dog, although subsequent generations may have different proportions of the two breeds in the mix. While this mix is uncommon, you may encounter it in a rescue, and we advise approaching with caution. This unpredictable mix simply can't be recommended to every dog owner. Even if you are confident of your experience with bully breeds, be aware that the Bernese Mountain Dog in the mix can make the animal even more challenging to socialize and manage. If possible, get to know the dog as an individual before you decide to take it home.

Appearance / health:
While all mixed-breed dogs can vary in appearance, the odds are high that someone paired the AmStaff and the Bernese together to produce a powerful and intimidating dog-- and that's what you'll get. Be confident of your ability to be a consistent alpha with a large, muscular animal.

Behavior / temperament:
While it's impossible to predict the exact personality of a mixed-breed dog, the odds are high that the Bernese Mountain Dog / American Staffordshire Terrier Mix will be far too much dog for the average person to socialize and manage. You must be an expert at socializing powerful and potentially aggressive or unpredictable dogs.
