Species group: Mixed Breeds
Other name(s): Labernese, Labranese
The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The first generation Labernese is a cross between a pure Bernese Mountain Dog and a pure Labrador Retriever, although subsequent generations may have different proportions of the two breeds in the mix. This large, athletic dog might be best for the active family with lots of time and space. This designer hybrid was apparently first created as a guide dog for the blind, but they do need a good trainer to make sure they are properly socialized and able to perform the task.
Appearance / health:
While all mixed-breed dogs can vary in appearance, the Labernese tends to be a large or even giant animal that can protect its human.
Behavior / temperament:
While it's impossible to predict the exact personality of a mixed-breed dog, the odds are high that the Bernese Mountain Dog / Labrador Retriever will demand careful and responsible training to get the best out of a potentially fine service animal. The Mira Foundation has said that their guide dogs are placed in foster homes where they receive this training and socialization for a year before the most well-qualified become guides.
Chihuahua / Papillon Mix
There is a lot of resistance to immidacloprid now. It was great when it worked. The tick part of it is permethrin. This is a toxic chemical to insects and mammals alike. With the safer drugs we have today there just isn't any reason to use this.
