Species group: Mixed Breeds
Other name(s): Griffonshire
The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The first generation Griffonshire is a cross between a pure Brussels Griffon and a pure Yorkshire Terrier, although subsequent generations may have different proportions of the two breeds in the mix. This so-called designer hybrid is intended to create an apartment-sized toy that fits easily into many families.
Appearance / health:
The appearance of your Griffonshire could be different depending on whether the Yorkie or the Griffon traits dominate, but you can expect a smallish cutie.
Behavior / temperament:
While it's impossible to predict the exact personality of a mixed-breed dog, owners have commented that their Griffonshires are very energetic and love to play with other family pets as well as their humans. They are social and thrive on being admired.
