Species group: Unrecognized and Rare Breed dogs
Other name(s): Brazilian Bulldog, Campeiro Bulldog
The basics:
The Buldogue Campeiro evolved from the ancient English Bulldogs brought to Brazil by European immigrants in the sixteenth century for jobs like herding and "finding" cattle, which sounds suspiciously like cattle-rustling to the modern reader. As a result, the Brazilian Bulldog needed to be tough, muscular, and capable of cooperating with other Bulldogs working in a pack. They have a powerful guardian instinct and should only be owned by responsible people who know how to socialize and manage protector breeds.
Little known outside its home country, the Brazilian Bulldog is recognized by the Confederação Brasileira de Cinofilia (CBKC).
Appearance / health:
The Buldogue Campeiro is agile and has a strong physical constitution. It has a large and broad head and, powerful, protruding jaws. The muzzle is wide and, but longer than that of other Bulldogs. The ears are small and set high and wide. They may either be rose or button. They have a short, crooked tail that does not reach beyond the hocks.
The Buldogue Campeiro requires minimal grooming. Regular brushing, along with an occasional bath, will suffice to maintain the coat in good condition.
This breed requires a moderate amount of exercise in the form of walks and jogs.
There are no known health issues specific to this breed.
Behavior / temperament:
The Buldogue Campeiro is a versatile and adaptable breed. Despite the looks, they are not unduly aggressive, but are, in fact, quite calm. They are loyal, inclined to be well behaved, and make good watchdogs. These dogs have a very strong protective instinct. Keeping in mind that they were developed to manage wild cattle without being turned aside by a charging bull, you may assume that they are courageous in defense of family.
This breed requires early socialization. Individuals respond to firm handling.
They are generally calm and do not bark a lot.
