Loyal to the family but not good with others

I loved my dog Johan growing up but as a dachshund he was a little tricky at times. It could just be my dog, however from other dachshund owners I hear the similar stories. Johan is loyal and loving with the family but he does not like strangers and strange dogs. It was always a shame to tell little kids while on walks who ask "can I pet your dog?" "No.". He did not like to be approached by people outside of the family and it was difficult when we brought others into the house. He hated sudden movements by others and would back at high loud voices of children.
All and all dachshund are good dogs but if you want a people dog and a dog to play with others I would not recommend a dachshund.
