When I was a teen, our family owned a Dalmatian as a family pet. She was more or less my sisters dog, out of the sheer thought that I didn't really care for Dalmatians! But she grew on me...
Though we often had other pets around.. (Cat's. Mice, Goat!), it seemed that Dally never would mind. And she was always playful with all of us kids. She was an indoor/outdoor dog, and looking back, it suited her well.
She never had any health problems. And her short-hair was convenient, while she was inside. She was of a lighter build, but in very good shape.
Eventually, in her older age, she began having problems 'holding it', and she would have accidents. Eventually, for age reasons, we had to have her put-down.
If your kids have dreamed '101 Dalmatians', don't hesitate! They do make a really good family pet. I would find one as a puppy, and go from there. The Dalmatian can be aggressive, but it's not in there nature, and I believe around a family environment, they really to flourish!
