The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.

Breeders seeking to create healthy crosses often reach for the alert, active Labrador Retriever, America's most popular purebred dog and indeed one of the most popular breeds worldwide. As a result, there's a wide variety of Labrador Retriever mixes available to pet owners who are more interested in certain looks and personality traits than in possessing a registered show dog.

There are so many different crossbreeds and potential mixes that we need to approach every Labrador Retriever mix as an individual. However, as a general rule, if the Labrador Retriever characteristics dominate, you should expect a friendly, energetic companion who enjoys sharing an active lifestyle. Don't allow these dogs to get bored.

Appearance / health:
It would be impossible to describe all of the possible characteristics of a Labrador Retriever mix. Some of the more popular crossbreds, like the beloved Labradoodle, are increasingly being accepted as emerging breeds of their own, and you can find many of these dogs discussed on their own pages.

For now, we'll simply note that the Labrador Retriever can be mixed with a wide number of other breeds to produce literally dozens of named hybrids ranging from Afador (Labrador Retriever x Afghan Hound) to Labmaraner (Lab x Weimaraner).

The purpose of the mix is usually to create a certain look or character that appeals to pet owners, with the added bonus that the mixed breed is less likely to suffer from genetic diseases sometimes found in the purebreds.

Behavior / temperament:
In mixes where the Labrador Retriever traits dominate, you should be prepared for the Labrador Retriever personality-- active, energetic, puppylike, with lots of energy to channel. Be prepared to provide early training and lifelong activities that you can share.

One of the best dogs I have ever had!

I worked in a dog rescue as my first job and there were many dogs I loved. I had previously adopted a dog from here when I first started, but then this sweet girl came around and I was in love. She was super scared as she had been dumped as a puppy in the forest near a subdivi...
