The Peke with a Heart of Gold

My family had just moved from the far north to the far south of the contiguous United States. It was decided, since none of our pets could make the move with us, that the family needed a small furry friend to bond with. My dad bought Leah, a female Pekingese, from a breeder. She had been trained well with easy commands and was an absolute ball of fun. Her small size made her perfect to take in the car and she even rode in the basket of a bicycle once! She was very gentle with the younger members of our family and had a cute little attitude about her. Our house was noisy with 4 kids anyway, so her little yaps didn't faze us much. As small as she was fierce, I think the paperboy was even a little intimidated at 4AM when she would pop up into the giant picture window to give him a piece of her mind. She was never truly aggressive, always good natured and obedient. Her trips to the groomer were regular and costly but her health was very much a priority.
We lost her too soon after she became a part of our family when she was hit by a car right in front of our house after the gate was left ajar and she went to explore. Truly, a family member passed away that day.
