Dog groups

After centuries of selective breeding by humans, the dog is the most diverse domesticated animal species on the planet.

Dog breeds are categorized by “breed group” depending on the work, function, or activity they were bred for, as well as for characteristics like size and temperament. Unfortunately, there isn’t a single breed group classification which is accepted worldwide, and different international kennel clubs have their own official and accepted breed groups.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) currently lists eight dog breed groups, while the Kennel Club (UK) has seven. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), the world's largest international kennel club, recognizes ten groups.

Here at RightPet, we list all dogs, not just the purebred and exhibition breeds. In addition to grouping the purebred dog breeds according to the AKC breed groups, we have added a couple of other categories so that everyone can share information about their dog. These extra groups are the Unrecognized and Rare Breed Group, for purebred dog breeds not yet recognized by the AKC, and the Mixed Breed Group, for crossbred and other mixed breed dogs.
