Distance healing, also known as remote healing, is based on the theory that healing energy can be sent to an animal, or person, who is not in physical contact with the practitioner. Distance healing, especially in the form of prayer, is perhaps the most commonly used complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) healing modalities.

Types of distance healing include: intercessory prayer, spiritual healing, non-directed prayer, external qigong, quantum-touch, energy healing, shamanic healing, nonlocal healing, therapeutic touch (TT), and Reiki.

A 2015 analysis of studies conducted on both human and animal distance healing concluded, "Despite the continuing popularity of DHI as an alternative healing modality, when it comes to assessing clinical efficacy, high-quality experiments have so far failed to show reliable effects."
