I have been an animal guardian since my earliest memories. I have cared for cats, dogs, mice, rats, guinea pigs, canaries, cockatiels, cockatoos, tropical fish, ribbon snakes, ball pythons, garter snakes, toads, and so on. I have had the cycle of life in my home.

She was like a little child. She was one of those dogs who shadowed her "mom." She was cute and cuddly; a definite lap dog.<br><br>I have to be honest, Violet wasn't that smart. At times it was amusing, at other times it was dangerous. <br><br>At one point, she zipped out the door and ran straight into the yard of a Rottweiler and was injured, required surgery to repair her shoulder. Months later, after her recovery, don't you know Violet snuck out the door and back into that same Rotty's yard.<br><br>As she got older, she developed fluid around her heart and required diuretic medication. At fourteen, Violet started having seizures which rapidly increased in severity and eventually, we decided it was best to set her free to doggy heaven.<br><br>Shih Tzu's are bred to be companions, and that's what she was for fourteen wonderful years.<br><br>Anyone considering a Shih Tzu should know they need regular grooming and eye care. They can develop eye problems, dental issues, and are known for what is called reverse sneezing.){kind=link}

He is giant in size and takes up a giant space in our hearts, too.<br><br>I'm sure you've heard the term "gentle giant" before. Well, let me tell you something. My He-Man, at 210 lbs, will spend a good ten minutes trying to climb into my lap when I'm on the patio chair. He gently places his paws on my legs and "tests" to see if it will hurt me. And by George, he will find a way to sit on my lap without causing me an ounce of "ouch."<br><br>My friend brings her baby over and sets him on the floor in the living room to play. We don't worry about our huge dog. He is extremely cautious. Not one time did he ever come remotely close to accidentally knocking the baby over.<br><br>In six years, my Saint Bernard hasn't even knocked one cup off an end table or coffee table by his wagging tail.<br><br>He-Man was a joy to train. This is such an intelligent and willing to please breed. My dog is extremely friendly. He's not a good guard dog, however. The joke is that if anyone broke in our house, He-Man would greet them and show them around.<br><br>My Saint Bernard rarely barks. He usually looks to our other dogs to see if it's time to bark. I see him watching them and notice he's the last to sound off.<br><br>Because of his gigantic size, he requires lots of exercise to keep his hips strong in order to prevent hip dysplasia. He loves the exercise, especially in the winter.<br><br>No, it is not cliche that Saint Bernards love the winter weather. It is 100% true. My dog not only loves the snow, he thrives in it. We go sledding, and I kid you not, He-Man pulls us in our sleds back to the top of the hell.<br><br>Yes, this dog is huge in so many ways. However, not for guarding and not for someone who cannot commit to a daily exercising regimen.){kind=link}
