Prednisone or prednisolone are corticosteroids of choice when it comes to long-term treatment of immune-mediated or inflammatory diseases, while dexamethasone is mostly used when rapid effects are necessary, like anaphylactic shock, asthma attacks, and similar conditions.
Dexamethasone has more or less the same efficacy as an immune-suppressive drug as does prednisone, but it produces more gastrointestinal side effects and is more damaging to the liver.
