Clindamycin is one of the rare antibiotics that reach therapeutic concentrations in bone and teeth, on top of that it's very effective against anaerobic bacteria (bacteria which thrive only in oxygen-poor environments). The fact that it penetrates bone and teeth, along with its efficacy against anaerobic bacteria makes Clindamycin pretty much a perfect choice for the treatment of tooth root abscess. However, this isn't enough in most cases, and dental surgery in the form of root canal treatment or extractions (depending on the affected tooth) is necessary in order to prevent recurrence.

Clindamycin is usually well tolerated by dogs, however, it's hepatotoxic (it can damage liver) and it should be avoided if possible, in dogs with liver disease or history of liver disease.
