Useful since hyperglycemia is commonly associated with acute pancreatitis. Hyperglycemia is attributed to elevated plasma concentrations of glucagon, an abnormally low concentration of insulin in the blood, and elevations in the "stress" hormones (glucocorticoids). Since diffuse pancreatic inflammation and the associated destruction of beta islet cells causes permanent insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, the dog's blood glucose level should be monitored periodically in order to ascertain the transient or permanent nature of the hyperglycemia.
