ACL rupture requires surgery in order to stabilize the knee and avoid further damage to the joint. In this cases, buprenorphine is mostly used during and after the surgery to control the pain, alongside an NSAID.
It's one of the most commonly used opioid analgesics in veterinary medicine, as it is very effective and safe, it produces a lot fewer side-effects then morphine, methadone and other opioids, but it also provides weaker analgesia, it's used for mild to moderate pain.
Although it's only available in injectable form, this preparation can be given orally since it's readily absorbed through the oral mucosa and reaches therapeutic concentrations in the blood similar to those achieved after IV administration.
