Euthanasia is usually reserved for those cases with a life threatening or incurable disease, in which the animal is in pain or has a poor quality of life.
Sometimes there are other factors involved too if the animal is abandoned, or the finances of the owner are limited and treatment options are restricted.
It is never an easy decision for any owner and veterinarian to have to make. The process should be pain free and completed in a patient and caring manner, with respect to both the animal and the owner. If possible the owner should discuss what happens with the vet in advance, so they can be prepared. Some owners wish to stay with their pet through the euthanasia procedure, other owners do not- it is a personal decision.
