Heartgard protects against heartworm and other parasite worms such as hookworms and roundworms found in the GI tract. I have used Heartard for my dog and I have not had any issues. I love that it is a beef flavored chew that I give once a month. My dog thinks he is getting a treat when I give it to him. I even make him sit for it!

I really like that it is an oral chew versus liquid that is poured on to the back. It is less messy! The downside is that it is more expensive than other types of heartworm preventatives. However, I have had success with it and have not heard complaints from others so I continue to use it.

As with all heartworm preventatives, it does require a negative heartworm test before giving the Heartgard chew as well as a veterinary prescription. This means that you can pick it up from your local veterinarian or obtain a vet prescription for it and order it online.
